One Week in San José, Costa Rica: Top Spots to Explore
San José, the bustling capital of Costa Rica, is brimming with culture, nature, and culinary delights. Whether you're visiting for a week or just a few days, there's plenty to see and do. Here's a curated list of my favorite places that can make your stay in San José unforgettable. Note that for some of these destinations, having a car or using Uber is recommended for convenience.
Mirador Rancho Samana
Start your adventure with a visit to Mirador Rancho Samana. Located about an hour outside of San José, this spot offers a stunning view of the Central Valley. You can enjoy various activities like hiking and bird watching, or simply relax and take in the scenery. A delicious meal tops it off with my favorite being the steak. I order it everytime! Mirador Rancho Samana also has overnight cabins for a unique stay and a really cool plane on the property that you can explore. It's perfect for photography enthusiasts and anyone looking to soak in the beauty of Costa Rica's landscape.
Location: Rancho Samana, Alajuela Province
Barrio Escalante
If you're a foodie, Barrio Escalante is a must-visit. This trendy neighborhood in the eastern part of San José is packed with a variety of restaurants and cafes, offering everything from traditional Costa Rican dishes to international cuisine. It's the perfect spot to explore different flavors and enjoy a lively atmosphere. Some of my favorite spots are Cafeoteca, Franco and Apotecario. Popular Spots: Calle 33 for a variety of dining options
Municipal Crafts Market
For handmade souvenirs, head to the Municipal Crafts Market. This vibrant market is filled with unique items, from intricate jewelry to colorful pottery. My aunt and I love coming here to buy "tiliches" – bracelets and other small accessories. The market is a treasure trove of local craftsmanship and a great place to find special gifts for loved ones. It's a much better choice in comparison to other souvenir shops that are overpriced.
Location: Plaza de las Artes, Avenida Central, San José
National Theater of Costa Rica
After shopping at the crafts market, I highly recommend having coffee inside the National Theater of Costa Rica. This historic theater, built in 1897, is not only a cultural gem but also a beautiful place to relax and enjoy a cup of Costa Rican coffee. The elegant surroundings and rich history make it a memorable experience.

Braulio Carrillo National Park
To immerse yourself in nature, take a trip to Braulio Carrillo National Park. This expansive park offers lush rainforests, scenic trails, and abundant wildlife. It's a fantastic spot for hiking and experiencing the natural beauty of Costa Rica. The park's diverse ecosystems are sure to impress nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. To top it off, next door is Rainforest Adventures Braulio Carrillo if you're looking for more adventure! A word of caution is that the entrance for the National Park will show up abrubtly, so after you cross the bridge over a river stay on the lookout and don't drive too fast! It will be on your right and will have a flag next to a small sign.
Location: North of San José, accessible via Route 32

Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center
Visit the Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center for an incredible variety of animals. This rescue center, located about 30 minutes from San José, is dedicated to rehabilitating and caring for wildlife. The property is beautiful, and you can see everything from monkeys to exotic birds. It's an educational and heartwarming experience that highlights the importance of wildlife conservation. Lastly theres a great restaurant on the property so you'll have a great choice of food to satisfy your appetite after walking around the property.

A visit to Costa Rica wouldn't be complete without experiencing the Britt Coffee Tour in Heredia. Just a short drive from San José, this tour takes you through the process of coffee production, from bean to cup. You'll learn about the history of coffee in Costa Rica, enjoy some delicious samples, and if you get lucky, you can assist the coffee pro and learn how to make a traditional Costa Rican coffee.
